Trade deficits don’t really mean anything, it’s a mistaken belief.

Senator Paul Critiques Trade Tariffs

This week on ABC Sunday, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) described the current trade policies as an “economic mistake.” He pointed out the broader implications of trade barriers imposed by the U.S. on other countries.

During the discussion, host Jonathan Carle highlighted the topic of tariffs, mentioning the president’s recent temporary reductions on China’s substantial tariffs. However, Carle noted that a 30% tariff remains on certain imports from China as negotiations are ongoing.

In response, Paul commented, “Tariffs essentially function as taxes, and businesses typically pass these costs along to consumers. This leads to higher prices. It’s crucial for people to understand this. Quality products often come from China and the U.S., and it’s a matter of trade.”

He further remarked, “We’ve had a trade deficit with China since 1976, yet both nations have seen increases in wealth.”
