Yankees broadcaster Dave Sims has shared that he won’t be announcing the upcoming series finale between the Mets and Yankees.
He’s been battling laryngitis, which has made it tough for him to comfortably take the mic at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night.
“Anyone tuning in to Saturday’s game on WFAN heard me struggling,” Sims mentioned on X. He explained how he tried everything from gargling and steam inhalation to hot tea with honey and chicken soup, but it was clear this laryngitis was getting the best of him. It’s the first time in his 23-year career that he’s had to step away due to this issue.
In his post, he likely included a photo of himself with his head over a pot of hot water, tea by his side.
This season marks Sims’ first year as the Yankees’ radio voice after taking over from the iconic John Sterling, who retired last year.

Anyone listening to Saturday’s game on WFAN heard me on the way out. The amount of gargling, steam smother smother, hot tea with honey, or chicken soup made no difference. My first laryngitis sent me to my IL, who called baseball in 23 years. I got mad to miss the rubber match… pic.twitter.com/tcnmesd85f

This news comes soon after Sims faced criticism from WFAN Morning Show host Boomer Esiason.
“I’ve worked with Dave, and he’s a great guy,” Esiason said on the “Boomer and Geo” show. “But come on, you’ve just started as a Yankee announcer, and now you’re thinking about a break?”
He went on to express disbelief, saying, “What are you doing? You just did a Yankee job! That should be your life’s work. If he were here as long as John Sterling was, taking a weekend off later in his career would be totally fine.”
Sims will need some time to recover, especially since the Yankees have a break until they host the Rangers on Tuesday.
