Liverpool aims to elevate their game to new heights by acquiring “extra weapons” this summer, according to Arne Slot. He mentioned that, alongside strengthening the squad through transfers, tactical enhancements are also in the works to keep the team progressing.
The players enjoyed a four-day break after their home draw against Arsenal, but they’re back to action, facing Brighton on Monday night. With their position at the top of the league secured, Liverpool is shifting its focus to recruitment and investment this summer. Slot plans to discuss strategies with sports director Richard Hughes, particularly targeting specific areas for improvement. A standout target appears to be Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong, with the club considering activating his release clause of 35 million euros (£29.5 million).
“I think we can find one or two additional weapons that this team currently lacks,” Slot remarked. “Perhaps we’ll do that in the transfer window. Strengthening is essential. Just look at how Manchester City spent £200 million in January—that’s what teams are doing. Beyond just the transfer window, there are areas we can enhance as well.”
Like many top teams, Liverpool has found themselves at a disadvantage due to opponents using underhand tactics that disrupt play, which clearly frustrates Slot. “It’s concerning when tactics unrelated to football come into play,” he noted. “Delaying the game start, pretending to be injured, taking extra time for set pieces—those are my main worries. That kind of play was evident after we dropped points.”
“I wouldn’t lie awake at night, but, if I did, I might think, ‘Wow, how do you counter that style of play?’ It’s frustrating every time we lose points to it. Ruben Diaz mentioned something about Southampton’s negative tactics, and though it might not have been the best time to bring it up, he was right. Southampton can play how they wish, but we need to find solutions as a league.”
“The Premier League is tremendously intense; everyone says so. However, teams have developed strategies to slow things down.”
