As summer vacation plans are shaping up, travel advisors are sharing crucial safety tips for Americans visiting Mexico’s lesser-explored coasts, which are frequented by many celebrities. Sandra Awodele, creator of the travel blog COI Traveler, emphasized the attractions of Mexico, mentioning its affordability and easy accessibility. However, she cautioned that travelers should be aware of potential risks like theft, fraud, and cartel-related violence.
There have been emergency travel warnings for areas like Baja California Sur, La Paz, Los Cabos, and Cabo San Lucas. The US Embassy in Mexico has voiced growing security concerns in these popular tourist spots, prompting the Department of State to escalate travel advisories, particularly for Baja California Sur, now labeled as needing caution.
Awodele advises travelers heading to these areas to heed the guidance of local officials and embassy announcements. When driving in Mexico, it’s wise to stick to designated safety corridors that feature increased surveillance and regular security checkpoints, which can offer an extra layer of safety.
Smart packing is also crucial—travelers should carry multiple credit and debit cards as a precaution against possible loss or theft. Awodele shared her own experience of being scammed out of $250 while traveling to Tulum. Someone misled her about transport options, capitalizing on her anxiety about missing her flight. Despite her instincts telling her to be cautious, she paid the money, only to find out later that she had been manipulated.
She recommends that travelers keep cash in different locations, along with useful items like power banks and offline maps that show essential services like police stations. Staying vigilant is key while in Mexico; being aware of one’s surroundings can make a difference.
In case of any trouble, such as scams or other emergencies, Awodele urges immediate contact with the US embassy and prompt action to secure compromised cards and move to a safe location. Many celebrities, drawn by Mexico’s beautiful resorts and stunning beaches, often vacation there. Popular spots include Tulum for stars like Jennifer Aniston and Punta Mita, favored by the Kardashians and other A-list celebrities.
