The 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs have been exciting, and we’re now down to the final four teams. The hopes of a Canadian team winning the Cup were dashed in the second round, leaving the Edmonton Oilers standing alone as both the Jets and Maple Leafs have been mostly overlooked during the postseason.
This postseason has seen some predictions for the opening rounds. So far, the overall record sits at 10-2, with Edmonton being underestimated in both series. So, are we really witnessing the finals of the conference now?
Florida Panthers vs. Carolina Hurricanes
The Florida Panthers are living up to expectations. This year’s Stanley Cup champions mirror last season’s squad, featuring aggressive forechecking and solid defense that keeps the game at a brisk pace.
The acquisition of Brad Marchand at the trade deadline has proven beneficial for Florida. He’s brought a veteran presence to the third line, allowing Eetu Luostarinen to shine, as he leads the team with 12 points alongside Marchand.
However, there are some concerns about Florida’s goaltending. It’s surprising since Sergei Bobrovsky was instrumental in last year’s Cup victory. In the playoffs this year, though, Bobrovsky has been inconsistent, with a save rate of .901 and 2.31 goals allowed per game, falling short of his previous level.
On the other hand, the Carolina Hurricanes have turned things around dramatically. Entering the playoffs with worries about their netminding and power play, they initially seemed poised for another disappointing exit. Yet, they’ve managed to click under coach Rod Brind’Amour.
A big part of this transformation has been Andrei Svechnikov. Though a talented player, he often struggled to capitalize on opportunities, but this year has been different. He’s emerged as the leading goal-scorer for Carolina with eight goals and has been pivotal when it counts.
Capitals coach Spencer Carberry remarked that Carolina is “the easiest scout team in the playoffs,” which might be true. Everyone knows their strategy, but stopping them is a different beast. Their aggressive forechecking aims to suffocate opponents and create high-pressure situations, and it’s been working. After eliminating New Jersey and Washington with 4-1 series wins, they’ve left others scratching their heads.
This approach has historically faltered in past playoffs, but this year seems different. They’ve outperformed their opponents in shots, shutting down key players like Alex Ovechkin, who was limited to just one goal against them.
Freddie Andersen’s performance in goal has also been impressive. Typically reliable yet somewhat understated, he’s stepped up this postseason, allowing only 1.36 goals per game and sporting a league-best save percentage of .937. Everything appears to be falling into place for Carolina at the right moment, making them a formidable opponent.
Prediction: The Carolina Hurricanes will win the Eastern Conference Finals 4-2
Edmonton Oilers vs. Dallas Stars
There aren’t many stylistic differences between the Eastern and Western conference finals. While the Panthers and Hurricanes play a rough and tumble game, both the Oilers and Stars focus on a cleaner style, highlighted by immense star power.
Conor McDavid is hungry for a Cup win, determined to break Canada’s drought. He’s been spectacular in the playoffs, racking up 17 points and 14 assists, proving he elevates the game of those around him, drawing attention while enabling teammates to score.
This year’s Oilers team relies heavily on the combination of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but they’ve added more depth overall. This has allowed players like Evander Kane and Connor Brown to step up, providing the support the Oilers lacked last year.
However, a lingering weakness for Edmonton is their goaltending. Like last year, neither Calvin Picard nor Stuart Skinner has consistently shown reliability in net. The Oilers are counting on their offensive pressure to outscore opponents, which could be a tall order in this series.
The Dallas Stars are often described as “scary.” Prior to the trade deadline, they were already a strong contender, but the addition of Mikko Rantanen significantly boosted their chances. Early fears about his production turned around, as he has become a standout performer in these playoffs.
Lantanen currently leads the NHL with 19 points, including nine goals and ten assists. This addition has been crucial for the Stars, giving them the depth they sought through a bold trade with Detroit, allowing him to mesh seamlessly with their roster.
Yet, the Stars need to ensure they don’t create weaknesses in their game. Their struggles emerged in the first round against the Avalanche, and they faced challenges again in a tightly contested series with Winnipeg. The statistics suggest they’re more dominant than they appear, but consistency with younger players raises questions about their ability to control the series against the expectations.
Prediction: The Dallas Stars will win the Western Conference Finals 4-3
