The Toronto Maple Leafs faced yet another disappointing Game 7, marking their seventh consecutive loss in this decisive round, and they really struggled on their home ice.
According to a report from SportsNet, a fan even threw a beer at the Leafs’ bench. Veteran right winger Mitch Marner mentioned he had to duck to avoid a jersey that was tossed during the second half of the dismal 6-1 loss.
The tailgate scene outside the arena was a real mess, as fans seemed to be at a loss after the defeat.
With just ten minutes left in the final period, frustrated supporters began tossing their jerseys onto the ice while the Panthers advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they will meet the Carolina Hurricanes.
This defeat adds to a long history of playoff disappointments for Toronto. The team’s roster includes stars like Marner, Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and former Islander John Tavares.
Since Tavares joined the Maple Leafs in 2018, the team has gone 0-5 in Game 7 matchups. They’re now on a record streak of seven consecutive Game 7 losses, the longest such streak in NHL history.
After starting the series strong by winning the first two games, the Maple Leafs lost the next three, leading some fans to turn on captain Matthews, with jerseys landing on the ice after Game 5.
Coach Craig Berube remarked post-game that the team’s playoff struggles stemmed more from mental barriers than from skill deficits. “For me, it’s all about what’s going on in my head,” he said, referring to the team’s mentality.
Amid the chaos, Marner expressed his frustration on the bench, shouting, “Wake up!” after the team allowed three unanswered goals, deflating the energy in the building.
As it stands, the future may hold changes for the team. Marner, the alternate captain, is poised to hit free agency this offseason, raising questions about his future with the franchise.
The Panthers, the defending champions, are set to face the Hurricanes for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Tuesday.
