Mike Vrabel not concerned about the team’s difficult 2024 season

Patriots’ Mike Vrabel Focuses on the Future

Mike Vrabel, the new head coach for the Patriots, isn’t fixated on the franchise’s recent struggles. When discussing his approach with the team, he made it clear that the past is behind them, especially following a disappointing 4-13 season under former coach Jerod Mayo, who was relieved of his duties in January.

In an episode of the “Forged in Foxborough” web series, Vrabel responded to a question about last year’s failures with a blunt message. “Why should I care about last year?” he said, emphasizing his focus on the present and future rather than dwelling on past mistakes. “I’m more interested in what can go right moving forward.”

Last season marked the first time since 1999 without Bill Belichick coaching the Patriots. Unfortunately, the team struggled considerably, beginning the season with a narrow 16-10 loss to the Bengals and then spiraling into a six-game losing streak. By late December, their record had plummeted to 3-13.

In what became a chaotic finish, New England managed to conclude the season with a victory over their rivals, the Bills, but it came at a cost. That win meant they sacrificed a better draft position for the 2025 NFL Draft, followed by Mayo’s dismissal shortly after the game.

The Patriots quickly moved to fill the coaching gap by hiring Vrabel, who had been without a head coaching role following his exit from the Titans after six seasons. Although he didn’t coach last year, he served as a consultant for the Browns.

But Vrabel isn’t the only newcomer for the team in 2025. They also secured a three-year, $69 million deal with star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, potentially giving quarterback Drake Maye an exciting new target on offense. Additionally, former Jet Morgan Moses joined the team on a three-year, $24 million contract, with defensive player Milton Williams and linebacker Robert Spiran also being significant signings.

Vrabel spoke about the team’s direction, pointing out that building a unique identity is crucial. “Our main goal is to win the division,” he stated, looking ahead to their season opener against the Raiders on September 7. The first division clash will be against the Dolphins on September 14.
