Former President Joe Biden recently addressed his cancer diagnosis publicly, sharing a photo with his wife, Jill Biden, and expressing gratitude for the love and support from Americans.
“Cancer touches all of us,” he mentioned in a social media update. “Like many, Jill and I have discovered the strength that comes from these broken places. Thank you for your unwavering love and support.”
Biden’s office confirmed the diagnosis over the weekend, revealing that it followed the identification of “prostate nodules” and a noted increase in urinary symptoms.
“Earlier this past week, President Biden was found to have a prostate nodule after reporting these increased symptoms,” read the press statement. “On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer having a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” which the office explained indicates a more aggressive type of cancer. However, they also pointed out that it seems to be hormone-sensitive, which may allow for more effective treatment options.
“The president and his family are currently discussing treatment plans with his physician,” the statement added.
Following the announcement, many, including former President Donald Trump, reached out with messages of support. “Melania and I are deeply saddened to learn about Joe Biden’s recent medical situation. We extend our warmest wishes to Jill and his family for a swift recovery,” Trump noted.
House Speaker Mike Johnson also expressed his condolences, stating that the Johnson family joins others in prayer for the former president.
Some have raised concerns regarding the transparency of Biden’s health status. Doctors have consistently asserted that at 82, Biden is fit to serve as commander-in-chief. Earlier this year, White House physician Kevin O’Connor affirmed that Biden possesses the capability to fulfill his responsibilities without needing any special accommodations.
“We must be candid about the former president’s ability to perform his duties,” Vice President JD Vance commented. He emphasized that assessing whether Biden is under proper medical supervision is critical, expressing doubts about Biden’s health and abilities.
“This isn’t about partisanship; I just genuinely have concerns about his health,” he said. “Why haven’t Americans been more informed about his actual health condition? This is no trivial matter; it involves the person responsible for the nation’s nuclear arsenal,” Vance elaborated.
As the nation now knows, Democratic leaders have significantly elevated Biden’s profile as their candidate ahead of the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
