“Desire to End Conflict but Uncertain About Russia’s Readiness”: Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukraine’s Uncertainty Over Ceasefire Talks

After discussions with President Donald Trump and other European leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed doubts about upcoming ceasefire negotiations with Russia, pointing to his lack of trust in Moscow’s intentions.

Zelensky indicated that Ukraine is open to achieving a complete ceasefire without any preconditions. While this proposal originated from Trump, it emphasizes the necessity for Russia to show its genuine commitment through tangible actions.

“I’m not certain about the principles coming from Russia. From my talks with President Trump, it seems the Russian side plans to send us a note regarding their views on these principles,” he stated.

“I sincerely hope that there’s a strong interest in reaching a ceasefire. The casualties are too high. We genuinely want this war to end. But I’m unsure if Russia is ready, and we don’t want anything from them in particular,” he added.

His comments came after his participation in a call with Trump and European leaders, where he reaffirmed his readiness for direct talks with Russia.

This situation led to discussions about consultations following the recent breakdown of a ceasefire effort in Istanbul. After President Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine would “quickly” start negotiations to halt the ongoing conflict, the Vatican also expressed a willingness to facilitate talks, despite the failure to reach a ceasefire agreement and a preliminary understanding to exchange prisoners between both countries.
