Wyndham Clark had a tough final round during the PGA Championship last weekend. It was quite disappointing for him. On Sunday, after a rough tee shot, he sent his driver crashing into a sign near the tee box. This followed a bogey on the previous hole and, unfortunately, his shot veered right of the 16th hole.
Clark didn’t even wait for the ball to land before angrily tossing his club. The impact not only left a noticeable dent in the sign but also resulted in the club’s head becoming damaged. In frustration, he threw aside what remained of the broken parts as he made his way toward the bunker to play his next shot.
Reflecting on the incident, Clark mentioned on Monday that he didn’t believe he needed to take further action but acknowledged the need for improvement. He expressed a genuine apology for his behavior at the 16th hole. “As professionals, we need to maintain composure, even when frustrated,” Clark admitted. “My actions were totally inappropriate, and I recognize that I need to work on these reactions.”
He also acknowledged that he fell short of the high standards he usually sets for himself. “I strive to play for something greater,” he stated. “Yesterday, I didn’t live up to that, and I truly regret it.” His performance at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte was rough overall, where he managed to accumulate four consecutive bogeys at one point.
Ultimately, Clark ended the tournament tied for 50th place, finishing a hefty 15 strokes behind the champion, Scotty Schaeffler, who secured his third major title. It’s been a serious learning experience for him, one that, hopefully, he can take in stride moving forward.
