The Great Bra Debate: How Do You Wear Yours?
Dressing can feel like a bit of a contact sport, especially when it comes to putting on a bra.
A lively discussion erupted after Gisele Bryant from “The Real Housewives of Potomac” and her podcast co-host Robin Dixon talked about their contrasting techniques for fastening bras—like back clasps versus front fasteners. It all raised eyebrows, to say the least.
“Some people fasten it in front, then put it on and adjust their arms,” Bryant explained.
Dixon chimed in, acknowledging, “That’s how I do it too.” And that’s when the chaos began.
On a recent episode featuring Jenna Bush Hager and sportscaster Erin Andrews, they also sided with back clasps on their segment of “Jenna & Friends.”
“Honestly, we don’t put bras on like that. We put them on from the back. Unless it’s a front clasp, I can’t remember ever doing it any other way,” Bush Hager noted.
Andrews added her struggle, saying, “I’m all thumbs when it comes to that. I can’t strap.” She even joked about asking her husband for help, saying, “Honey, you’ll need to close this bad boy for me.”
This clearly isn’t just a fleeting topic; it’s a long-standing debate. It turns out, not everyone has the same method, and some can end up feeling a bit twisted or tangled.
Interestingly, multiple forums, like a trending Reddit thread, have women sharing tips on how to properly wear bras.
The debate has persisted through the years; different methods don’t necessarily mean discomfort or awkwardness, as some suggest.
One person in that Reddit thread pointed out, “It can depend on your shoulder width and how mobile you are. I couldn’t fasten a bra over my head, but I know someone who can do that with ease.”
Another user suggested, “The ideal way is to put your arm through the strap, pull it over, and then reach back to clip it.” It’s a whole world of techniques, really.
Over on TikTok, users are also sharing their perspectives, trying to figure out the best approach to wearing a bra.
“Honestly, I’m amazed that people do this differently,” one commenter mentioned in a TikTok video. “This is how I’ve always done it. The twist method feels weird for me, so, yeah, anyone else have tips?”
Interestingly, Gen Z seems to be flipping the narrative surrounding bras. Instead of the old traditions, they’re questioning the need for underwires altogether.
While they might not be staging bra burnings, many are opting to discard wired bras instead. TikTok creators are advocating for wire-free options that are gaining millions of views.
Stephanie Jade Lewis from Melbourne shared, “I hardly notice my wire-free bra. It feels liberating, honestly.”
Orly Jacobson, who recently had a breast reduction, expressed similar sentiments. “After so much discomfort with wired bras, I’ve seen so many women my age embracing playful bralettes that I felt compelled to join in.”
It seems Gen Z is indeed making their preferences known.
Experts like De Winter have noted a clear trend: more and more Gen Z women are moving away from traditional wired bras toward those without wires.
Whether you’re fastening, twisting, pulling, or seeking help, one thing is undeniably clear: the way we wear bras is evolving.
