Community Faces Devastation After Tornado
Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri stated on Monday that the community is experiencing significant “devastation,” emphasizing the urgent need for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding following a violent tornado that resulted in numerous fatalities over the weekend.
Speaking with Fox News Digital while surveying his neighborhood, Hawley noted, “Many people are hurting.” He pointed out that the impact of the storm extends beyond mere property damage, describing the homes as places where families have built lives over generations.
He relayed a conversation from a resident in the area, stating, “Unless they need to rebuild, the federal government must take a substantial role in disaster relief, and we want that as soon as possible.”
Over the weekend, at least 26 people lost their lives in the region. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear reported 19 of those deaths occurred in Kentucky, while Hawley’s office indicated Missouri counted at least 7.
“We lost 19 people in this weather event, each of them beloved by their families,” Beshear remarked. He also highlighted the ongoing support needed for ten individuals currently being treated in hospitals.
As assessment of the damage is still underway, Hawley also emphasized that private insurers must fulfill their obligations to policyholders, stating, “These loyal premium holders deserve to see their claims paid. It’s really important.” He acknowledged that recovery will not be swift, particularly as about 700,000 people were without power during the storm.
“We hope the governor will soon request emergency disaster relief,” Hawley added, expressing his eagerness for FEMA to act promptly.
