‘Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning’ signals the conclusion of Tom Cruise’s role as Ethan Hunt

Tom Cruise to Continue as Action Star

Tom Cruise is poised to remain at the forefront of action films for the foreseeable future. At the premiere of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” he shared thoughts about not stepping back from his role as a lead in action films. He had previously expressed a desire to keep making “Mission: Impossible” films into his 80s, much like Harrison Ford did with the “Indiana Jones” series.

“I mentioned wanting to make movies in my 80s—actually, I intend to keep doing it into my 00s,” the 62-year-old actor stated. “I will never stop. I will always act, whether it’s dramas or comedies—this is thrilling for me.”

The upcoming film is billed as the concluding entry in the “Mission: Impossible” series. Cruise confirmed this is the last time he will portray the fictional IMF agent Ethan Hunt, emphasizing, “It’s the final! It’s not named ‘the final’ for no reason.”

Cruise originated the role of Hunt in 1996 and revisited it in seven subsequent films, making “The Final Calculation” the final installment of the franchise.

Reflecting on his nearly 30 years in the series, he remarked, “There’s so much collaboration with filmmakers, crew, and the culture of our work. It’s been a journey filled with learning about storytelling, life, and leadership. Every aspect of filmmaking has been a remarkable experience, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked on it.”

As a franchise icon, Cruise has shown he’s more than capable of performing his own stunts—whether it’s hanging from a plane or leaping from one rooftop to another.

Before he filmed a particularly risky stunt in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Records Part 1,” which he described as “the most dangerous thing he’d ever attempted,” he rode a motorcycle off a cliff into a valley. In a segment released just prior to the film, he shared, “This is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid.”

In a lighthearted moment during an interview in June 2023, he joked about the challenging stunt, saying, “We’ll know on the first day if we’re continuing with the film or if there’s going to be a major rewrite!”

The premiere for “Mission: Impossible – Final Calculation” is scheduled for May 23, 2025.
