Sophie Cunningham alleged to have an affair with the CEO of Suns and Mercury in surprising lawsuit

A recent lawsuit alleges that Sophie Cunningham, a former Mercury player, has connections with the married Josh Bartelstein, who is the CEO of both the Mercury and Suns. This was reported in detail by the Daily Mail.

Gene Traylor, the Suns’ director of safety, security, and risk management, filed a lawsuit in May, claiming issues of racism and security within the organization. He states that Cornelius Craig, the vice president of security and risk management, has been spreading rumors regarding Bartelstein’s relationship with Cunningham.

The lawsuit notes that Traylor informed Bartelstein about Craig discussing issues that could potentially threaten the organization. One particularly explicit comment from Craig that was shared was, “Josh Bartelstein is f—king Sophie Cunningham.”

Cunningham, now 28, was drafted by the Mercury in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft and played for the team until 2024, when she was traded to the Heat in February after signing a deadline agreement for the 2025 season last September.

Due to injuries, she didn’t participate in the Fever season opener. “Phoenix has moved away from home and become my home. I’m excited to be in the valley and continue to play in front of the best fans of W-X-Factor,” she said in a press release at that time. She also mentioned the support of owner Matt Ishbia, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to growth both on the court and in the community.

According to Phoenixmag.com, Bartelstein, who is married to Sydney since November 2024, has spoken warmly about his wife, crediting her with supporting him in his demanding role. “The job is incredibly tough. It’s the best job ever, but it’s long, stressful, pressured, and very public,” he remarked. Both he and Sydney have navigated the ups and downs together.

Bartelstein joined the Suns and Mercury as CEO in April 2023 after working with the Pistons for eight years. As CEO, he oversees various business operations for the franchise, aiming to enhance both teams. Ishbia noted that Bartelstein understands the culture and strategic vision for both franchises, which is crucial for their advancement.
