New York: Dawn Richard Testifies Against Sean “Diddy” Combs
In a dramatic courtroom scene, singer Dawn Richard recounted a threatening encounter with Sean “Diddy” Combs during a sex trafficking trial. Richard claimed that Combs threatened to kill her if she revealed witnessing him physically abusing his long-term girlfriend.
Richard testified that the threat came soon after an alleged incident in which Combs reportedly hit Cassandra “Cathy” Ventura with a frying pan. She stated, “I, and another woman, saw the attack.” This shocking moment prompted her to express to the prosecutor that, under such threats, “we could go missing.” Richard firmly responded, “We can die,” reflecting her disbelief at the situation as it unfolded while she was recording music with him.
Returning to the witness stand, Richard reiterated the very real threat she felt as Combs stands accused of abusing women over a span of 20 years, during which he allegedly used his power as an entertainment mogul to instill fear and exert control. Combs has pleaded not guilty, and his defense attorneys argue that while there’s evidence of domestic violence, it does not equate to the federal crimes he faces.
Richard also mentioned witnessing Combs’s aggressive behavior firsthand, recalling several instances from a visit to his recording studio in 2009. She described how he often hit, dragged, and suffocated Cathy, along with displaying violence towards his staff, asserting, “I won’t respond, they won’t do anything.”
Interestingly, the defense counsel suggested Richard’s anger stemmed from personal grievances against Combs due to his past decisions regarding her group Danity Kane. When asked if she felt Combs had ruined her career multiple times, she confirmed, “Yes.” However, she clarified that her motivations for testifying were rooted in her anger over the alleged abuse and the financial manipulation she experienced.
Another key witness, Kelly Morgan, who used to be Cathy’s best friend, shared her perspective. After witnessing Combs’s violent outbursts, including an incident in Jamaica, Morgan noted that “He controlled everything,” indicating Cathy’s struggles in breaking free from him. Morgan described a scenario where Cathy expressed frustration over her stalled music career, adding that Combs was always in charge of her professional path.
Lastly, David James, a former personal assistant to Combs, painted a picture of Cathy’s experience early in their relationship. He recalled her being amazed, even overwhelmed, by Combs’s extravagant lifestyle, lending insight into her reluctance to leave him despite the troubles.
