The wedding registry for toilet paper – is this the most unromantic gift request?

Wedding Lists: A Modern Perspective

So, wedding lists have been around for quite a while—over a century, in fact. They started in Chicago about 101 years ago. It seems they’re evolving, or maybe deteriorating, depending on how you view it. It’s surprising how, sometimes, people are told exactly what gifts to get for weddings. I mean, who really wants to be told that someone needs toilet paper?

But honestly, that’s where we’re at now. Stores like Tesco have taken this concept and run with it. Wedding lists should ideally help couples set up their first home together, but in many cases, that’s not the norm anymore. Imagine your best friend announces they’re married, but they don’t even share a home yet. What do you say?

I suppose I’ll try to engage in a conversation about their life. But really, most recent newlyweds already have a place together, so a new set of tableware or a futon isn’t exactly what they need. Toilet paper? Now that’s another story. Sure, they always need that, and other essentials too.

The strategy behind Tesco’s wedding list is all about practicality. A survey indicates that many newly engaged couples actually prefer useful gifts over extravagant ones. It’s not all about showiness—there are layers to consider here.

Layers? Oh, definitely. For those feeling a bit more extravagant, Tesco offers something they call the “Toast to Love” package. It’s really just champagne disguised as a gift. The basic option runs about £39 and comes with some biscuits and tea.

And then there’s a more practical package for £63 that includes five rolls of toilet paper, a bunch of kitchen rolls, a couple of toothpaste tubes, a bin bag, shampoo, conditioner, and so forth. Talk about a mixed bag!

Sometimes, I wonder how sad this all is. The reality is, while practicality can be beneficial, weddings today can feel incredibly costly. Reports from 2022 show that newlyweds often find themselves in about £4,000 worth of debt just for their big day.

All that for just a single day? It’s crazy, right? Though… think of all the biscuits you could get in those packages.

So, is this wedding list trend just a fleeting phase? Like when couples during wartime would hide tiny wedding cakes inside larger decorative cakes?

No, that’s not what’s happening. Fast forward 50 years, and people are still joking about newlyweds receiving something as mundane as a bin bag from guests.

It’s a bit amusing. I suppose I’ll just keep my chin up. At the end of the day, a wedding can still be the happiest day for someone—especially if they really need those essentials like toothpaste!

Just remember, when proposing to your partner, perhaps say: “Darling, let’s get married.” But definitely don’t say, “Because we’re out of marsh rolls.”
