Season 23 Champion Jamal Roberts Honors God Following His Win

Jamal Roberts Wins Season 23 of American Idol

The finale of Season 23 of “American Idol” took place on Sunday night, where Jamal Roberts, a 27-year-old physical education teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, was declared the winner. Roberts, who has a gospel music background, grew up singing in churches. His performance repertoire included his original song “Heal,” an American poll song, and a cover of Tom Odell’s “Truck,” along with a duet featuring Jerry Roll.

“I’m still trying to deal with this… God is so good,” Roberts shared in an Instagram post following his win. He expressed his surprise, stating, “From my first step on that stage to this incredible moment, I never dreamed that a kid from my hometown would become an American idol one day. This journey is bigger than me, and I’m really grateful to everyone who believed in me while I chased my dreams.”

As a father to three daughters, he noted, “I want to show that faith, hard work, and determination make anything possible. This victory is for my family and everyone who supported us.” Roberts received a $250,000 prize and a recording contract with Hollywood Records/19 Entertainment. Interestingly, he had auditioned for “Idol” as a teenager, but he was told he needed more training, as reported.

“I never felt defeated,” he stated. “I never gave up. I understood ‘no’ as a chance to learn and improve.” He also ranked in the top three of the 2020 BET gospel competition. According to a past interview, Roberts shared how he grew up listening to gospel music, hymns, and soul. “My grandparents recognized my talent early on, and I started singing in church, covering songs by The Temptations and Michael Jackson. My family was deeply involved in the church, so I was there whenever the doors opened.”

In an interview after the finale, he mentioned how education remains a significant part of his identity despite his new career in music. “I wasn’t teaching for just the money; it’s really about the kids. They’re my inspiration,” he explained. “Even if I go back just to show up, I’ll always want to be part of that experience.”

The finale featured standout performances from the top three contestants, including Roberts, John Foster, and Breanna Nix, who placed third. The event also showcased various special guest appearances, including Salt-N-Pepa, Jessica Simpson, Good Charlotte, and worship artist Brandon Lake.
