Concerns Raised by Air Traffic Controller After Blackout Incident
A veteran air traffic controller, who experienced a 90-second blackout alone at Newark Liberty International Airport, expressed serious concerns about safety, suggesting it’s just a “matter of time” before a “fatal crash” occurs.
This incident happened during a severe traffic management system outage on April 28, 2025, leading to reports of staffing shortages and extensive flight delays. The 39-year-old controller mentioned feeling traumatized and has since taken stress-related leave, undergoing psychological evaluations following the incident, which occurred early in the morning on May 9.
In a conversation with an anonymous individual, the controller was asked whether flying from Newark was safe. He strongly advised against it, saying, “You should intentionally avoid your airport when booking a flight, even if the alternatives are more expensive and convenient.” He believes the ongoing issues with air traffic control at Newark could lead to a tragic incident between aircraft if not resolved soon.
As Newark Liberty International Airport continues to face challenges, many travelers might be reconsidering their options, weighing safety against convenience.
