Congresswoman Faces Assault Charges in New Jersey
Democratic Representative Ramonica McQuiver from New Jersey is facing assault charges following an incident involving ice agents at an immigration detention center in the state.
The charges stem from an alleged attack on a law enforcement officer that occurred earlier this month outside the facility. Legal representatives for Alina Habba, a New Jersey attorney, have announced plans to sue McQuiver and other lawmakers, accusing them of attacking law enforcement and obstructing their duties.
This confrontation took place during a protest on May 9, where McQuiver joined Newark’s Mayor Ras Baraka and other officials outside Delaney Hall, according to Habba. Tensions reportedly escalated during the demonstration.
“Rep. Lamonica McQuiver assaulted and obstructed law enforcement, which is a violation of federal law,” said Habba in a statement. “We can’t overlook this behavior from a federal official. It’s my duty to ensure law enforcement is protected.”
“No one is above the law, regardless of their position. Our office is committed to justice, and we’re making sure the judicial system is effective,” she added.
In response to the charges, McQuiver claimed the accusations are politically driven. She stated, “These claims are solely political in nature. They aim to distort my actions and undermine legitimate surveillance efforts. This administration remains dedicated to serving our community, and I appreciate the overwhelming support during this challenging time. I’m looking forward to presenting my case in court.”
Former President Donald Trump, commenting on the situation, expressed his thoughts, remarking, “I don’t even know who she is. But from what I saw, she was out of control, pushing against federal agents.”
The complaint alleges that McQuiver tried to prevent Mayor Baraka’s arrest after being ordered to leave a restricted area. It also claims that she had direct physical contact with law enforcement, reportedly causing injuries to her arms during the incident.
The charges were prompted by a thorough examination of video footage, according to Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem. She stated, “If you assault a law enforcement officer as seen with McQuiver, you will face full legal consequences.”
In the wake of the charges, prominent Democratic leaders issued a unified statement defending McQuiver. They vowed to counter what they deem an abuse of power.
“An attack on one of us is an attack on all Americans. House Democrats will respond strongly,” the statement read.
They further asserted that after the incident, McQuiver was still permitted to tour the facility, indicating a lack of evidence against her wrongdoing.
“There’s no credible evidence suggesting McQuiver engaged in any criminal activity. If she had, she wouldn’t have been allowed to tour the facility afterward,” emphasized the lawmaker.
