George Wendt Passes Away at 76
Actor George Wendt, known for his iconic role on the hit sitcom Cheers, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 76. According to a report, he died peacefully in his sleep, although no specific cause of death has been provided.
A representative for Wendt described him as “a devoted family man, a cherished friend, and a joy to everyone who knew him.” They expressed, “He will be missed forever,” while requesting privacy for Wendt’s family during this difficult time.
Wendt is perhaps best known for portraying Norm Peterson on Cheers, a role he held throughout the show’s 11-season run from 1982 to 1993. Interestingly, he recently reunited with co-stars Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson for a podcast episode titled Where Everybody Knows Your Name in the summer of 2024.
Wendt also had a memorable stint on Saturday Night Live, notably hosting in 1991 and featuring as Bobsworski in a popular sketch. His comedic timing and charm endeared him to many fans.
The Chicago native appeared in various sitcoms and shows over his career, both prior to and after Cheers. Some of these included Heart to Heart, Taxi, Alice, Seinfeld, Spin City, The Truth About the Naked, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, George Lopez, Family Guy, and The Goldbergs.
On the film side, Wendt’s credits include roles in Forever Young (1992), The Little Rascals (1994), Bye Bye Birdie (1995), Alice in Wonderland (1999), Santa’s Little Helper (2009), Sandy Wexler (2017), and Christmas with Campbell (2022).
