U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins remarked on Tuesday that the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is marred by “fraud, abuse, and corruption,” highlighting a need for significant reforms during a policy event with Breitbart News.
Rollins shared a striking figure, indicating that the USDA spends around $400 million daily on 16 nutrition programs.
“To reiterate, that’s $400 million of taxpayer funds used each day for USDA’s nutrition initiatives,” she stated. “So when the president discusses government accountability and the responsible use of taxpayer dollars, it’s crucial to evaluate whether these programs are truly effective.” She expressed uncertainty about the existence of similarly problematic programs.
Reinforcing her point, Rollins emphasized the necessity for officials to scrutinize the program closely, given the vast amount being spent daily. She described the SNAP system as “ripe with fraud, abuse, and corruption,” citing an instance where the Secret Service arrested a person involved in SNAP fraudulent activities. She mentioned that “tens of millions of dollars” have been wrongly taken, with funds also going to undocumented immigrants.
“Naturally, we’re committed to reforming this throughout the government. There’s a lot of work ahead of us. The reality is, we’re handing out considerable sums without requiring any work from capable adults,” Rollins explained.
“This isn’t the America we envision. If we collect taxpayer money, we should ensure it’s used effectively,” she continued.
“This remains a significant focus of our agenda at the USDA. In the upcoming weeks, we’ll be unveiling more plans. We’re actively working on various policies, and this is a priority. Collaborating with our congressional allies is essential, and they’re also contributing to the country’s future,” she added.
Breitbart News has collaborated with CGCN and the Alfa Institute to arrange the event.
