Mexican Authorities Arrest Colombian Soldiers Linked to CJNG
Mexican officials have reported the arrest of several Colombian soldiers connected to a paramilitary group supporting the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which the U.S. labeled as a terrorist organization earlier this year.
The arrests occurred over the weekend in Michoacan, following a violent confrontation where Mexican forces killed twelve gunmen and captured nine others. Unfortunately, three Mexican troops were also injured in the altercation.
This incident took place in rural communities in the southwestern region of Michoacan, an area noted for its significant strategic importance to criminal enterprises. The coastal regions of Michoacan serve as a critical transit point for large shipments of cocaine, which arrive via small boats from Central and South America before being moved further inland.
The gunfight adds to a concerning trend of violence sweeping through the Michoacan province. Much of this turmoil arises from ongoing turf wars between various cartels, including CJNG, La Familia Michoacana, and several smaller factions.
To escalate their operational capabilities, these criminal groups are reportedly hiring foreign mercenaries, including members of Colombian terrorist organizations like FARC. It seems these Colombian soldiers provide training and other support. According to reports, since the arrival of these instructors, cartels have begun adopting new strategies, which include the use of improvised explosive devices. Lately, there have even been instances of commercial drones being weaponized to drop these explosives, a tactic that has quickly gained popularity across different groups in Mexico.
