Kevin Spacey Criticizes the Impact of Blacklisting from #MeToo in Passionate Lifetime Achievement Award Speech

Kevin Spacey Reflects on Blacklisting at Cannes

Kevin Spacey, who has won two Oscars for American Beauty and House of Cards, drew comparisons to the renowned blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo while accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

He received the Film and Television Excellence Award at the Better World Fund Gala and referenced Trumbo’s struggles after being labeled a communist in Hollywood during the 1950s.

“I was reminded of Kirk Douglas, a true American movie icon,” Spacey said. “It’s been a while, but he made a bold move when he chose to hire Dalton Trumbo, who couldn’t find work for over a decade because of the blacklist. Can you imagine not being able to work in your field for 13 years? That’s just unimaginable.”

He continued, reflecting on how Trumbo was vilified—especially after the release of Spartacus. “It’s scary to think about the repercussions he faced. Douglas took a risk when he chose to stand up for what was right, but, in reality, many situations aren’t that straightforward. Sometimes, standing up for principles can feel really complicated.”

Spacey labeled the blacklist era as “a terrible time in our history,” expressing concerns about potential repetition of such events, particularly in the context of the #MeToo movement.

After facing serious allegations that effectively derailed his career nearly eight years ago, Spacey has begun to reclaim his position, winning a number of court cases.

He has found support during his comeback efforts from several Hollywood figures, including Sharon Stone, Liam Neeson, and Stephen Fry.

Stone expressed her eagerness to see Spacey back in action, calling him a “genius” who brings elegance and humor. “He’s incredibly talented and has a lot to offer,” she remarked.

Neeson shared his sadness regarding the allegations against Spacey, emphasizing his good character and likening him to a valuable asset in the industry. “We really miss him,” he added, noting Spacey’s artistic talent.
