Virginia Democrat Gerry Connolly passes away at 75 following his fight with esophageal cancer

Virginia Representative Jerry Connolly Passes Away

Virginia Congressman Jerry Connolly, a Democrat, died Wednesday morning after a long struggle with esophageal cancer, as announced by his family.

He was 75 years old.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of our devoted father, husband, brother, friend, and civil servant, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, who passed away peacefully this morning at home,” his family stated.

“Jerry was someone who dedicated his life to helping others and improving our community. He always stood up for what was right and just,” they added.

Connolly had been a prominent figure on the House Oversight Committee until stepping down in April, having recently defeated Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for a key position.

His death marks the third loss of a House Democrat this year, coming at a time when Republicans were pushing for significant legislation under President Trump.

Colleagues expressed their sorrow upon hearing the news of his passing.

“I am heartbroken at the loss of my friend and colleague, Rep. Jerry Connolly,” said Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio). “Jerry’s legacy is one defined by intelligence and integrity. His absence will be greatly felt both in Congress and beyond.”

Connolly had an extensive political career, starting on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the late 1970s before moving into local politics. He joined the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in 1995 and became chairman in 2004.

Known for his professionalism, Connolly was instrumental in extending the Metrorail Silverline to Washington Dulles International Airport, which is significant for the region.

Throughout his Congressional tenure, Connolly attempted to chair the oversight committee multiple times, facing defeats in 2019 and 2022. Yet, when Jamie Raskin (D-MD) shifted to the House Judiciary Committee, Connolly seized the opportunity and won the position with support from Nancy Pelosi.

His death follows that of Representatives Sylvestre Turner (D-Texas) and Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz) in March, and all eight recent appointments to Congress have been Democrats.

“This is moving,” said a tweet regarding the moment Republican Virginia Fox paused a hearing for a quiet prayer upon learning of Connolly’s death.
