Conor Day aims to end the dry spell for Indiana at the Indy 500.

Conor Daly’s Ambitions for the Indianapolis 500

As the Indianapolis 500 approaches, Conor Daly aims to make his mark in racing history. Winning this iconic race would not only grant him a permanent spot in Indy 500 lore but would also elevate him to folk hero status in his home state of Indiana.

It’s been a staggering 85 years since an Indiana-born driver clinched victory at this event. Daly, driving the No. 76 Chevrolet, carries the legacy of Wilbur Shaw, a three-time winner, in his heart. Since 1940, nobody from Indiana has taken home the trophy.

“Eighty-five years without a win for Indiana, it feels wrong. It’s just sad,” Daly shared in a conversation. He plans to honor Shaw by donning a specially designed helmet during the race. “I try to make my helmet unique each year for the Indy 500, incorporating elements of his legacy,” he added.

In the recent race, Daly finished in 11th place, sandwiched between fellow racers Scott McLaughlin and Alexander Rossi. Despite this, he was thrilled with the performance of his car, averaging an impressive 231 mph during qualifying.

“It feels great,” he remarked. “I really think this could be one of the best cars in my IndyCar journey. Driving it has been a joy.” He described the high-speed experience as “crazy,” pointing out the thrill and danger that come with pushing the limits.

Daly expressed that winning the Indy 500 would fulfill the aspirations he’s chased throughout his career. “This is why I get up every morning,” he explained. And, yes, he has even thought about what he’d do if he won, specifically what kind of milk he’d like to drink in celebration.

“I’ve been drinking whole milk for years, and it didn’t work out. So maybe it’s time for a change to 2%,” he mused.

The Indianapolis 500 is set to air on May 25th, with coverage beginning at 10 AM, promising to be an exhilarating event for racing fans everywhere.
