Aaron Rodgers’ Future Speculations and Coach’s Take
Past coaches of Aaron Rodgers are making some intriguing predictions about where he might head next.
On Wednesday’s “Up & Adams,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur shared his thoughts about the four-time MVP, expressing a wish that Rodgers might end up with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s interesting, isn’t it? He mentioned, “I hope he’ll become a Pittsburgh Steeler,” which kind of implies that there’s some interest there.
When LaFleur was asked about any offseason buzz regarding Rodgers and the Steelers, he said, “I’ve never heard of either.” That kind of suggests there’s not much chatter, at least from him. Yet, he added, “I’m sure they know what they’re doing.” There’s a bit of cautious optimism in his words—maybe some hope that it could happen.
Rodgers, now 41, spent his first 18 seasons with the Packers, playing for LaFleur from 2019 to 2022. He then moved to the Jets in April 2023. It was a bit of a rocky offseason, and despite winning a Super Bowl at the end of the 2010 season, his time in New York was tough. He ended his stint with a 5-12 record, missing the playoffs last season.
Plus, he faced an Achilles injury that sidelined him the previous year, which didn’t help his case. After being released by the Jets earlier this year, the Steelers might find themselves as potential suitors.
Back in March, Pittsburgh hosted Rodgers at their facility, which raised a few eyebrows since he was there with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson. Interestingly, ESPN’s Adam Schefter remarked, “There are no transactions at this time,” which leaves things pretty open-ended.
Then, a month later, on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers opened up about his current situation, hinting that he might be dealing with personal matters. “I’m trying to be open to everything,” he noted, adding that he wasn’t particularly tied to any specific decision. It’s a pretty thoughtful approach, I think. He emphasized that he feels unbound in regards to his future.
Meanwhile, the Steelers have added veteran backup Mason Rudolph following the departure of Wilson, who left for the Giants. They also drafted former Ohio State quarterback Wil Howard in the sixth round of the NFL Draft this year. It seems like they’re preparing for all possible scenarios.
If LaFleur’s hopes come to fruition, fans could see an interesting showdown in the first week when the Steelers face off against the Jets at MetLife Stadium, where Rodgers used to play. Last season, he threw for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions across 17 games.
