Liberty’s Upcoming Road Debut
Liberty is set to make their road debut in Chicago on Thursday.
Even though the season kicked off without the Sky looking particularly strong, Jonquel Jones is anticipating a tough matchup. “They use their physicality to cover up some of their weaknesses, I think,” Jones mentioned on Tuesday. “If we treat it like an easy game, we could be in for a surprise.”
The Sky seemed to struggle in their season opener with a disappointing loss in Indiana.
Chicago recorded 17 turnovers and had a rough time shooting the ball, yet Kate Rinklerk and her teammates stayed competitive throughout the game.
Courtney Vandersloot, Ariel Atkins, and Kia Nurse—three players added to improve spacing and provide opportunities for post players like Angel Lease and Camila Cardosaw—managed to score only 19 points on 7 of 23 shooting.
What the Sky brings is a tough, gritty approach, especially in rebounding on the offensive end.
It will likely be a significant test for Liberty, as Sandy Brondello has emphasized reducing second-chance opportunities. “We need to match their level of physicality,” Jones commented. “It’s essential we come out aggressive.”
Marine Johanne announced on her Instagram story on Wednesday that she won’t participate in the upcoming EuroBasket tournament in France next month. “It was definitely a tough decision,” she shared in French, “but it feels right today.”
This news is unfortunate for the French women’s national team but could benefit Liberty, which may only lose key players temporarily.
Nyara Sabally and Leonie Fiebich are also expected to leave for Germany to compete next month, as EuroBasket runs from June 18th to 29th.
As for Rebekah Gardner, there’s hope that her return to Chicago will spark some strong emotions.
Gardner was never drafted by UCLA and spent a decade playing abroad before the Sky offered her a chance in the WNBA as a 6-foot-1 guard in 2022.
In the last two seasons, Gardner had impressive rookie years, but injuries sidelined her time and again.
Before the 2024 season, the Sky traded Gardner’s rights for two second-round picks.
This upcoming game will be her first since the trade. “I’m excited to go back,” she said. “I love New York, but that place feels like home.”
