Stephen A. Smith Criticizes Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s Comments on Marco Rubio
On Wednesday, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith sharply criticized Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen for expressing regret over his vote to confirm Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Van Hollen accused Rubio of neglecting serious protocols, particularly concerning the deportation of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a suspected gang member involved in domestic violence.
During an episode of “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” Smith referred to Van Hollen’s statements as “absurd” and staunchly defended Rubio’s qualifications. He questioned how anyone could doubt Rubio’s credibility, highlighting his extensive political background, including being a former presidential candidate and a seasoned senator. It seems rather odd, doesn’t it? I mean, are we really going to question someone of his stature and experience?
Smith had strong words for those claiming Rubio’s ineptitude. He stated, “I know who Marco Rubio is. He is neither unqualified nor lacking intelligence. To say otherwise is simply unfair.” Smith dismissed Van Hollen’s assertion that Democrats suffered defeat in the last election due to misjudgments on significant matters.
He continued, “Van Hollen is not there to merely agree with you. Their administration won, while you lost focus on what truly mattered.”
Garcia, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, first gained attention in 2019 when law enforcement discovered him in a Home Depot parking lot, dressed in clothing linked to the MS-13 gang. That same year, immigration authorities confirmed him as a “verified member” of this violent group.
In 2021, Garcia’s wife accused him of serious domestic abuse, stating he physically attacked her and damaged her belongings. The following year, authorities linked him to human trafficking after he was caught transporting eight undocumented individuals in a vehicle linked to a convicted smuggler.
