Earthquake with a Magnitude of 4.3 Strikes Nepal

Kathmandu: Earthquake Strikes Nepal

On Friday morning, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake jolted Nepal, as reported by the National Center for Seismic Science (NCS).

The incident occurred at 01:33 am, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The specific coordinates were 29.36 N latitude and 80.44 E longitude.

Details shared on X included, “M: 4.3, ON: 23/05/2025 01:33:53 IST, LAT: 29.36 N, LONG: 80.44 E, depth: 10 km, location: Nepal.”

No immediate news of injuries or major damage has surfaced yet, but further information is awaited.

Shallow earthquakes, like this one, can be particularly hazardous. They tend to release more energy near the Earth’s surface, potentially leading to stronger ground shaking and greater structural damage compared to deeper quakes.

Nepal’s geographic position on the convergent boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide makes it prone to such seismic activity. The constant pressure from this interaction results in these earthquakes, especially since Nepal sits in a subduction zone where the Indian plates slip beneath the Eurasian plates, increasing stress levels dramatically.

This region, known for severe seismic activity, experiences ongoing collisions of these tectonic plates, leading to significant strain on the Earth’s crust.

Historically, Nepal has faced catastrophic earthquakes, such as the one in 2015, which took an immense toll on lives and infrastructure.

On April 26th, a moment of silence was observed to honor the 8,969 individuals who perished in the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25, 2015. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stood beneath a monument replica of the Dalahara Tower, a reminder of the destruction suffered a decade ago.
