Couple Taken into Custody After Baby Discovered Surrounded by Decomposing Goat and 47 Uncared-for Animals

Deplorable Living Conditions for Infant and Animals Discovered

Authorities in Honea Pass, South Carolina, made a disturbing discovery—an eight-month-old child was living in a house overwhelmed by neglect. The residence was not only filled with the stench of ammonia from animal feces, but also contained 47 neglected animals. These included raccoons, rabbits, dogs, cats, chickens, and even the decaying remains of goats found in bathtubs.

Despite the harsh conditions, the infant was reportedly found in relatively good health and has since been relocated. The parents, Kayla Leonard and Nicholas Foley, now face serious charges including child endangerment and animal abuse.

The Honea Path Police Department stated that the investigation uncovered incredibly unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. They reported encountering numerous animals invading the home and noted the presence of dead animals alongside the living ones.

“The amount of feces and waste was unfathomable; it was hard to believe anyone could live in such conditions,” said Dr. Kim Sanders from Pose, who was brought in to assist with the overwhelming animal situation.

Authorities managed to safely remove over 40 animals from the property, highlighting the disturbing state of the home. Officials emphasized that they’ve never seen conditions this severe throughout their decades of service, pointing to the potential risks posed to both the child and the animals involved.

The case remains a poignant reminder of the need for vigilance regarding the welfare of children and animals alike in our communities.
