Community Reacts to Fatal Shootings
The recent fatal shootings involving two Israeli embassy staff members have deeply troubled the American Jewish community, particularly in light of the ongoing rise in anti-Semitism over the past year.
Yuval David, a filmmaker and Jewish activist based in Washington, D.C., expressed his feelings to a news outlet, stating that the deaths of Yaron Lisinski and Sarah Milgrim “hit too close to home for all Jews in America.” He added, “Being so near, here in Washington, D.C., makes it especially personal. This is our nation’s capital, and it’s alarming.” David pointed out that many in the Jewish community are now bolstering security measures at businesses, schools, and synagogues in response, indicative of the belief that existing safety protocols may no longer be enough after the recent violence.
David met Lisinski just a day before the tragic shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum, where they had discussed issues regarding Islamism in the West. Although the crime occurred in a Jewish community space, it’s noteworthy that Lisinski was not Jewish. David remarked on the concerning perception that being identified as Jewish poses a risk. He emphasized the troubling reality that many people seem to downplay the severity of anti-Semitism.
“This wave of hatred is pervasive,” he remarked. “It’s been intensifying for years, both in this country and globally.”
Jewish activists have reported encountering anti-Semitism in Washington long before this incident, reflecting a broader issue. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported 151 cases of anti-Semitic acts in D.C. in their 2024 annual audit, showing that this is a persistent problem. David shared his own experiences with anti-Semitic behavior in the streets of the capital, passionately calling attention to what he sees as a growing crisis of prejudice and hatred towards Jewish individuals.
He urged others to recognize that this form of violence and bigotry extends beyond the Jewish community alone. “Some might say America is next, but the reality is that it’s already happening here,” David concluded.
