City reveals summer safety strategy as beaches open for the season

The beach is back!

NYC Beach officially opened for summer, and Mayor Adams announced plans on Friday aimed at keeping New Yorkers safe while they enjoy the local coastline.

This safety strategy focuses on protecting residents “through the air, land, and ocean,” involving multiple agencies working together.

“The city’s official summer season begins today, and we’re outside enjoying the Bronx,” Mayor Adams stated at Orchard Beach Friday morning.

“We want everyone in New York to enjoy summer in one of the greatest cities in the world. There are so many activities available, but safety comes first,” he added.

This framework addresses various concerns like crime, fire safety, extreme heat, water safety, street safety, and youth programs.

The NYPD will implement a crime reduction initiative this summer, adding over 1,500 officers in 70 designated Summer Unfolding Zones. A new “Quality of Life” division will also tackle issues like noise complaints and illegal mopeds, which usually rise during warmer months.

Each year, more than 500 New Yorkers die from heat-related causes. To combat this, the Emergency Management Department is launching a “heat campaign” that provides guidelines for staying safe in extreme temperatures. The city has released a “cooling center” map available on the city’s website.

At City Beach, lifeguards will be on duty from 10am to 6pm daily. Swimming is not allowed when lifeguards aren’t present. Additionally, public outdoor pools will be open daily from 11am to 3pm and then again from 4pm to 7pm starting June 27th.

Beachgoers might notice drones overhead this summer, which will monitor shark activity and ensure safety.

“We might discuss weather variations, but summer is here and FDNY is prepared,” said FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker. “In collaboration with our agency partners, FDNY is set to patrol the beaches both on land and in water, utilizing beach gators and drones. Warm weather definitely brings opportunities for outdoor enjoyment.”
