Oracle plans to purchase $40 billion in Nvidia chips for OpenAI’s data center in the US, according to reports.

Oracle’s Major Investment in Nvidia and OpenAI

Oracle is set to invest approximately $40 billion in Nvidia’s cutting-edge chips and OpenAI’s new data center located in Abilene, Texas. This information comes from a report by the Financial Times, published on Friday.

This data center is part of the larger US Stargate initiative, which involves leading AI companies around the world and aims to strengthen the United States’ position in the competitive AI landscape.

According to insiders, cloud service providers have sourced about 400,000 of Nvidia’s GB200 chips, leasing computational power to OpenAI as well.

Responses from both OpenAI and Oracle were not immediately available, although Nvidia chose not to comment.

The Texas data center is projected to be fully operational by mid-next year, with Oracle committing to a 15-year lease for the facility.

In terms of financial backing, JPMorgan is providing a significant portion of the funds through two loans amounting to $9.6 billion, while Crusoe, the site owner, along with Blue Owl Capital, has injected around $5 billion in cash.

This new data center will help OpenAI decrease its reliance on Microsoft’s resources—after all, the growing power demands of ChatGPT’s operators exceed what Microsoft can currently supply.

Furthermore, Oracle’s investment in data centers and the Stargate project represents a chance to bolster its cloud computing offerings and better compete with major players like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google.

Additionally, Oracle, OpenAI, and Nvidia are working on a similar project in the Middle East, where a large AI data center is being constructed in the UAE, expected to house over 100,000 Nvidia chips.

The first phase of this UAE data center is anticipated to be operational by 2026.
