Rubio shows steady support for Venezuelan opposition leaders as Maduro imprisons a leading political rival

U.S. Support for Venezuelan Opposition Amid Crackdown

Secretary of State Marco Rubio held discussions with Venezuelan opposition leaders on Friday, reiterating strong backing for their efforts as the regime of Nicolas Maduro intensifies its crackdown on political dissent.

“Meeting with these courageous Venezuelan opposition figures, who are targets of Maduro’s tyranny, is truly an honor,” Rubio mentioned on social media. “Their bravery fuels our quest for a more democratic future, especially in light of the recent arbitrary arrests of over 70 individuals, including Juan Pablo Guanipa.”

He also emphasized, “The United States remains steadfast in supporting the safe return of all Americans wrongfully detained, viewing it as part of the larger struggle for democracy.”

Guanipa, a close associate of imprisoned leader Maria Corina Machado, was taken into custody by Maduro’s regime early Friday morning, just ahead of Venezuela’s planned regional elections on Sunday. His arrest was perceived as a tactic to hinder opposition efforts.

Venezuela’s Home Minister Diosdado Cabello announced Guanipa’s arrest on state television, claiming they were “dismantling a network of terrorists” who threaten the peace and integrity of the nation’s elections.

In a pre-recorded message circulated by the anti-Maduro side following his detention, Guanipa stated he was “unfairly imprisoned” but would not be defeated. “If you’re seeing this, it’s because I was forced into the clutches of Nicolas Maduro’s regime,” he spoke, reflecting on his time in hiding to avoid arrest.

“Regrettably, my time in hiding has ended. Today, I find myself among those targeted by the dictatorship.”

Earlier this month, the five opposition figures who met with Rubio in Washington were rescued from the oppressive environment of their home country. They had been living under the protection of the Argentine ambassador in Caracas since facing threats of arrest in March.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce remarked on the occasion, highlighting Rubio’s recognition of the bravery exhibited by Machado, who remains in Venezuela, and expressing gratitude for those involved in the rescue operation.

Many nations, including the United States, view Maduro’s leadership as illegitimate, citing substantial evidence that opposition candidates received a significantly higher vote count in last year’s presidential elections than the current administration.
