Apache helicopters to soar over Indy 500 pace lap in celebration of Army’s birthday

Indy 500 to Honor the US Army This Weekend

The Indy 500 is set to celebrate a significant milestone this weekend by honoring the US Army on its 250th anniversary. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is expected to draw in thousands of fans eager to witness one of the most iconic IndyCar races.

Before the drivers take off, aiming to secure their place in racing history, the spotlight will first shine on the Army, which is marking an impressive 250 years since its establishment. It’s kind of amazing to think about, right? I mean, the Army has played such a vital role throughout American history.

As part of the tribute, two Army Apache helicopters will soar over the cars during the first pace lap of the race—a moment referred to as “American Pacing.” This year marks the 109th running of the Big Race, which has been around since 1911. Just shows how traditions can carry on through the years and become a big part of our culture.

Earlier this month, President Trump announced plans for a military parade in June to honor military veterans and active service members, coinciding with the Army’s anniversary on June 14th, which also happens to be Trump’s birthday. So, yeah, quite the occasion for both sides.

Furthermore, this parade is part of a broader initiative, “Task Force 250,” created after Trump signed an executive order in January. The goal here is to coordinate celebrations leading up to the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. It’s bound to bring a lot of attention and excitement, making sure we don’t forget our history—though sometimes it feels like we overlook it quite a bit.

The White House is also planning other events leading up to this milestone, celebrating key moments in the founding of America, like Patrick Henry’s famous speech and Paul Revere’s midnight ride. It’s a reminder that history shapes who we are today, even if we get caught up in the present.

As the race approaches, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia. It’s not just about the cars on the track; it’s about the stories and the heritage behind it all. Here’s hoping it turns out to be a memorable event for everyone involved.
