Mets Secure 5-2 Victory Over Dodgers
On Saturday night, Juan Soto almost hit a grand slam during the fourth inning, but unlike previous near misses this season, this one wasn’t caught. The ball soared high towards the center-right fence.
Soto’s performance included a go-ahead, two-run double, which really ignited the cheers from the crowd as he stepped into the batter’s box. Honestly, it was something he needed.
The Mets needed it too.
Soto helped the Mets clinch a solid 5-2 win against the Dodgers in front of 41,332 fans at Citi Field. He had entered the game with the team struggling in scoring situations, sitting at 27th in Major League Baseball for scoring position with a .213 average. He ended the night going 2-for-5, contributing to the Mets’ 11 hits, marking their second win in three games.
The rubber match of this series is set for Sunday night, a rematch from last year’s NLCS. Soon after, the Mets will head to Dodger Stadium for a four-game road trip.
David Peterson delivered an impressive performance, going deep into the game—much needed since the bullpen had already seen heavy action with eight relief appearances in the past 13 games. He pitched seven innings, giving up only five hits while striking out seven batters and walking two, which is the longest outing for a Mets starter this season.
Edwin Diaz closed things out with four scoreless outs, marking his second outing of the season that lasted more than an inning.
In the second inning, Peterson struck out Tommy Edman and was able to get out of a tough jam when Enrique Hernandez’s single brought in the first run of the game, putting the Mets in a 2-0 hole after Dalton Rush’s groundout.
Jared Young, making his first appearance with the Mets after being called up from Triple-A Syracuse, helped initiate a rally after getting hit by a pitch. Tyrone Taylor followed with an RBI single, bringing the Mets closer at 2-1.
Soto then highlighted a big fourth inning with his two-run double, pushing the Mets ahead 4-2.
With Lewis Torrence on base, Baty kept the inning alive with two walks, loading the bases for Francisco Lindor. Soto’s hit not only boosted the score but also created a tense moment as Sterling Marte was thrown out at home.
The Mets’ defense also played a crucial role, successfully executing three double plays to aid Peterson. In the fourth, Hernandez’s double play and in the sixth, Tescal Hernandez turned a 6-4-3 double play after Mookie Betts’ leadoff single.
As the game progressed, another double play in the seventh inning started by Baty helped maintain the momentum. In the eighth, Baty hit a double, further securing the win and finishing the game with a solid 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
