MONTELLEY, Mexico
In a thrilling finish, Esther Gonzalez, a Spanish international, netted a late goal that led Gotham FC to a 1-0 victory over UANL Tigres on Saturday. This win marked the inaugural championship of the Concacaf W Champions Cup.
The 32-year-old forward delivered the decisive blow in the 82nd minute, securing a significant win for the NWSL team.
Earlier in the tournament, the Portland Thorns claimed third place by defeating Club America 3-0. Pietra Tordin kicked things off with a goal just before halftime, followed by Payton Linnehan at the 52nd minute, and Olivia Moultrie capped it off at the 81st.
To reach the final, Gotham FC had previously triumphed over Club America, winning 3-1 on Wednesday. Tigres, on the other hand, moved past the Portland Thorns with a 2-0 victory in the semi-finals, which, interestingly, came after their earlier loss in Mexico’s Klaus La Quarter Final.
The W Champions Cup serves as the premier women’s club championship in the region and will also act as a qualifier for next year’s FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
