Jorge “El Peris” Figueroa, affiliated with the Sinaloan cartel and loyal to El Chapo’s son, Ovidio Guzmán, was shot dead in a skirmish with Mexican authorities during an arrest attempt. Reportedly, Figueroa, part of the “El Chapitos” faction, fired at Mexican soldiers on Friday, prompting a lethal response.
This incident took place in Navarat, located about 32 kilometers (19 miles) from Culiacán, the Sinaloa state capital. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had previously placed a $1 million bounty on Figueroa for various serious charges, including conspiracy to traffic fentanyl and money laundering.
Mexican Secretary of State Omar Garcia Harfuch noted on X that the operation to apprehend Figueroa was part of a broader strategy aimed at restoring peace in Sinaloa.
He also stated that Figueroa was one of the key figures involved in a 2019 attack on law enforcement in Culiacán and was linked to various violent acts disrupting the peace in the region.
A notable event happened in 2019 when the attempted arrest of Ovidio Guzmán López led to violent confrontations between cartel members and security forces. Ultimately, to avoid further violence, authorities released Guzmán. He was later recaptured in 2023 and is now serving a life sentence in the U.S., having recently arranged to bring 17 families to America, including El Chap’s former wife.
