Carlos Alcaraz praised for his fair play at the French Open

Alcaraz Shows Sportsmanship at French Open

In an exciting match on Sunday at the French Open, Carlos Alcaraz delivered a stunning volley that initially wowed everyone: the chair umpire, spectators, and his opponent, Ben Shelton. But Alcaraz, aware of the rules, took a moment and decided to stick to fairness, admitting that he hadn’t made contact with the ball using his racket. This led him to concede the points to Shelton, ultimately winning the match with a score of 7-6 (8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the fourth round.

“It was a ‘hot shot’ of the day, so that’s a shame,” Alcaraz said, smiling afterward.

What happened? Early in the second set, Shelton had been making some impressive passing shots past Alcaraz at the net. In a moment of frustration, Alcaraz inadvertently threw his racket into the air. Somehow, as the racket flipped, the strings made contact with the ball, sending it back over the net.

Initially, Alcaraz was awarded the points. However, he then approached the umpire to clarify that he hadn’t actually had his racket in hand when the ball was hit. Recognizing that this was against the rules, he gave the points to Shelton, who is seeded 13th in the tournament.

The crowd at Philippe Chatrier applauded Alcaraz for his sportsmanship when officials explained the situation on court.

“I understand; I couldn’t say anything. I would have felt guilty not saying anything,” Alcaraz reflected. “It’s important to be honest with myself and with Ben.”

This moment could have swung the match as Alcaraz went from a 40-30 advantage to 30-40, giving Shelton his first breakpoint. However, Alcaraz managed to save that and five other breakpoints during an intense rally.

“I thought it was pretty surprising,” Shelton commented. “I couldn’t believe he threw his racket like that and then let go.”

Despite being a two-time major semifinalist, Shelton was up against Alcaraz, also a four-time Grand Slam champion, known for his powerful shots. The match was tight; Shelton had three chances to win the first set, even leading the tiebreak at 6-4 and 7-6. If he had taken just one more point, he could have claimed it.

Alcaraz, facing US No. 12 Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, managed to save the set after Shelton netted a backhand. Ultimately, Alcaraz converted his second set point with a stunning forehand that forced an error from Shelton.

After winning the third set, Shelton’s fans erupted with excitement, but Alcaraz responded in the fourth set by breaking Shelton’s serve at 2-1, continuously gaining momentum. The match lasted three hours and 19 minutes, showcasing a riveting display of skills.
