Solar panel systems could support grasslands in times of drought: Research

A recent study suggests that placing solar panels in Colorado’s grasslands could alleviate water stress and enhance plant growth by around 20% during drought years.

In these regions, where grasslands often lack sufficient water, the partial shade offered by solar installations helps plants endure the intense summer heat. Researchers highlighted that the water that collects on the panels also contributes positively to plant health.

Interestingly, while the solar array was initially intended to maximize energy output, it inadvertently created a more favorable environment for grass growth in dry periods.

In warmer climates, solar arrays serve as vital sources of renewable energy. However, they also limit sunlight availability for plant growth, which can lead to reduced vegetation and, subsequently, less carbon storage and feed for grazing animals. Despite this, during dry years in semi-arid Colorado, scientists discovered that grass on the eastern side of the panel thrived better than that in some adjacent open areas.

Even in wetter and more typical conditions, the east side of the panels continued to exhibit greater grass growth compared to nearby control sites, though the growth rate was slower.

The researchers suggested that adjusting how the panels are arranged could enhance environmental benefits. For example, altering their positioning could provide shade during hotter temperatures or more light during the growing season.

“With minor tweaks in design and management of the array, we could unlock previously untapped benefits, especially concerning water use,” noted Sturchio.

Looking ahead, Colorado State University’s Professor Sturchio and lead author Alan Knapp are examining optimal ways to position solar infrastructure to support both grazing livestock and pollinator habitats.

Ultimately, the authors concluded that photovoltaic solar arrays present a distinct opportunity to harness solar energy while also mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, which can help lessen climate change impacts, including water restrictions that affect ecosystems.
