Detroit Lions’ Offensive Line Faces Major Setback
The Detroit Lions’ offense has hit another significant hurdle. Just a few months after parting ways with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Pro Bowl Center Frank Ragnow announced his unexpected retirement on Monday.
At only 29 years old, Ragnow’s career spanned seven seasons with the Lions in the NFL. He took to social media to express his struggles, mentioning that despite attempts to convince himself he could keep playing, he ultimately realized he wasn’t physically able to do so.
“I thought there was more to give,” Ragnow shared in his Instagram post, “but the reality is that I simply can’t.” He was drafted by the Lions 20th overall in 2018. “Listening to my body has been crucial, and making this decision feels incredibly difficult.”
Reflecting on his journey, he continued, “The last few months have been quite challenging as I’ve come to terms with my decision to retire from the NFL. The Lions organization has been exceptional during this entire process, and I’m truly grateful to the team and all the fans. It’s been an honor to play for you.”
Ragnow has faced several injuries throughout his career. Remarkably, in 2021, he played while dealing with a broken throat but later signed a lucrative four-year, $54 million extension, becoming one of the league’s highest-paid centers at the time.
Throughout his tenure, Ragnow earned second-team All-Pro recognition in 2020, 2023, and 2024, and he made his first Pro Bowl under coach Matt Patricia in 2020, securing third place in the following seasons.
In addition to Ragnow’s retirement, the Lions had an impressive season, clinching the NFC’s No. 1 seed with a 15-2 record before their playoff exit against Washington.
