WNBA: Angel Reese Faces Backlash After Chicago Game
Last Thursday, the Chicago team went up against the Dallas Wings at home. They managed to secure their first win of the 2025 WNBA season, and it also marked their fourth consecutive victory. However, Angel Reese’s performance was underwhelming, recording only six points. In contrast, her teammates Camila Cardoso and Ariel Atkins contributed significantly with 23 and 17 points, respectively, raising concerns about Reese’s impact on the game.
In the aftermath of the game, Reese received substantial criticism. As a star player, expectations were high, especially in light of her struggles with shooting throughout the season. There was also spotlight on rookie Page Viewker, who scored 15 points in that same game, further emphasizing Reese’s disappointing performance.
Interestingly, commentator Jason Whitlock offered an alternative viewpoint. He acknowledged that Reese has shown improvements in her game and also hinted at a possible change in her approach towards her rival, Caitlyn Clark.
“Angel Reese demonstrated real growth and awareness,” Whitlock stated. “She seems to have found her niche as a role player, instead of solely being an offensive threat.”
He believes the feedback Reese has received throughout the season has actually benefited her. Her recent game seemed to signal an adjustment in her play style, aligning more closely with her strengths.
“Why the change?” he questioned. “Because she listened to her critics.”
Whitlock continued, “This is why it’s essential for athletes, regardless of race, to face criticism. If they feel immune to it or perceive it as merely a racial attack, they’ll struggle to evolve.”
He expressed hope that the same critical lens could benefit other players, specifically pointing out Indiana Fever rival Kate Linklark. Whitlock suggested that if Reese is wise, she might reconsider her stance with Clark, a player who hasn’t wronged her.
“Continuing the rivalry with Caitlyn Clark doesn’t yield positive outcomes for Reese—it only fuels narratives that some people want to exploit, claiming to be her friend,” Whitlock remarked. “If Angel Reese were to make amends, it could mark a significant triumph not just for her, but also for the WNBA and Clark.”
