The son of former NFL wide receiver and CFL Hall of Famer Milton Stegall has tragically passed away at the age of 20.

Chase Stegall, a promising college soccer player, died unexpectedly on Monday morning in his dorm at DePaul University in Chicago.

The specifics surrounding his death have not been disclosed.

“Chase was known for his warmth, strength of character, and vibrant presence—qualities that affected many around him, both on and off the field,” said Manuel, addressing the community’s sense of loss.

His absence is keenly felt by teammates, coaches, classmates, faculty, staff, and everyone in his circle. The community expresses sincere condolences to Chase’s family, friends, and loved ones.

A sophomore at DePaul, he had played as a midfielder in 16 out of 17 games this past season.

His coach, Mark Plotkin, along with Vice President and Athletic Director Dewayne Peevy, jointly remembered him as “a dedicated teammate and a heartfelt friend.”

“We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Chase Stegall, a beloved member of our community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who loved him,” they stated, acknowledging the heavy emotional toll this has on the university and athletics community.

In the days ahead, the university plans to support Chase’s family and teammates during this difficult time. They will also announce details for an additional service in the forthcoming days.

Chase is survived by his parents, Milton and Darlene Stegall, and his brother, Colin.

His father, Milton “Milt” Stegall, joined the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent after graduating from Miami University in Ohio. Milt had a brief stint with the Bengals before facing a serious knee injury and transitioning to the Canadian Football League, where he signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

By 1997, Milt had become a crucial player for the Bombers, gaining fame in the CFL before retiring in 2009, holding notable records at the time for receptions and yards.

After Chase’s passing, Winnipeg Blue Bombers CEO Wade Miller expressed the organization’s deep sorrow. “We are heartbroken by the sudden and tragic passing of Chase Stegall, the cherished son of our legend,” he said in a statement.

“Chase was a bright, talented young man with an encouraging future, and his loss is profoundly felt throughout our Blue Bombers family. Our thoughts are with Milt, Darlene, and the entire Stegall family during this unimaginable time.”
