Rand Paul disagrees with Trump on raising the debt limit in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act

Senator Rand Paul’s Opposition to Trump’s Debt Bill

Senator Rand Paul has voiced his concerns regarding a sizable debt increase included in a major bill, which he believes contradicts conservative values. Despite his discussions with President Donald Trump, Paul remains adamant that the proposal—set to add $5 trillion to the national debt—falls short of conservative principles.

Addressing reporters, Paul remarked that this debt increase stands out as unprecedented for the United States. “We’ve never actually raised our debt cap without meeting that goal,” he stated. He emphasized that while one might argue the money won’t directly add to the current debt, increasing the ceiling by that amount effectively fills it.

Paul further criticized the legislation, labeling it a “terrible idea.” He had expressed his reservations to Trump, who claimed to have done most of the talking during their conversations. Paul mentioned that he told the President he couldn’t back the bill if the debt cap remained in place, suggesting he would consider alternative proposals if it were separated out.

The senator pointed out that Congress had opted to continue spending in order to avoid a government shutdown. He recalled how Republicans had opposed what he termed “Bidenomics” during the campaign, yet the current spending levels are essentially a continuation of Biden’s policies. “By the end of September, the deficit is projected to hit $2.2 trillion, which is far from conservative,” he added.

During weekend discussions, Trump warned that a vote against the bill by Paul could hand the matter over to Democrats, implying it would lead to drastic tax increases. He made a statement on his Truth Social platform, asserting that if Paul votes against this “great, big, and beautiful bill,” he would be aligning with “radical left Democrats.” Trump urged that the people of Kentucky might not forgive such a stance.

Looking ahead, Senate Republicans are set to debate the bill, which could present a challenging situation for Speaker Mike Johnson as discussions evolve.
