“The Longest Day of Golf” truly extends for those trudging through two rounds.
Max Homa stepped up to that challenge by carrying his own bag during 36 holes on Monday at the Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Powell, Ohio.
Homa managed to snag a spot in the playoffs, which included Ricky Fowler, Eric Cole, Chase Johnson, and Cameron Young, after struggling with three putts on the 36th hole. This left him vying for a position as they prepared for the 38th hole.
“It’s probably heartbreaking, but I’m okay,” Homa shared. “Carrying the bag for 36 holes, it’s been a while—I’m feeling a bit worn out.”
With temperatures nearing 90 degrees and the intensity of the playoffs, he noted he wasn’t keen on discussing his caddy situation.
“I’d rather not get into caddy talk; instead, let’s focus on golf,” he expressed. “I’m good. Just turned 36 into hoofs.”
Homa parted ways with his longtime caddy, Joe Grenier, two months ago and has since been working with Bill Hark. This change, apparently, wasn’t part of a grand strategy.
It’s been a challenging period for Homa, a six-time PGA Tour winner and former world No. 10. He finished 51st in the Memorial Tournament last weekend and came in 60th at the PGA Championship in May.
“Honestly, sometimes it feels easier without someone next to me,” he commented on his solo journey. “Maybe I need to walk more alone. It’s kind of nice, a peaceful experience. I can’t bring anyone to fight my battles; it’s all on me.”
Looking ahead, Homa is set to compete in the RBC Canada Open starting Thursday at TPC Toronto in Osprey Valley.
The US Open will kick off next week at Oakmont Country Club.
