CNN analyst surprised as GOP changes view of Democrats as the middle-class party

CNN’s senior political data reporter Harry Enten expressed surprise on Monday regarding the persistent distrust voters have toward Democrats, particularly on economic matters and the middle class.

One of the significant factors contributing to former President Biden’s struggles was voter concern over his economic policies, which also played a role in President Trump’s resurgence. While Trump has stirred some controversy with his tariffs and immigration initiatives, economic trust remains a crucial area for voters.

CNN host Kate Bolduan highlighted Enten’s insights, noting that Republicans have carved out an image as the party more trusted to aid the beleaguered middle class in America. Historically, this trust had been a strong point for Democrats; in 1989, they held a 23-point advantage, and in 2016, a 17-point one.

Enten remarked, “But look at where we are now—these advantages have diminished significantly.” He emphasized a shift where neither party maintains a strong grip on middle-class identity anymore—”It’s sort of like ‘adio, amigos.’” In his view, both parties are struggling with this aspect.

Interestingly, Enten mentioned that while Trump’s approach, particularly with tariffs, might shake voter confidence, Republicans still seem to maintain an edge, which is somewhat perplexing. He noted that data from November 2023 indicated Republicans held an 11-point advantage as the party aligned with voters’ financial views, which persists even today.

How does that happen? Enten questioned after all the economic turmoil, from stock market fluctuations to general discontent over tariffs. He referenced similar findings from Reuters/Ipsos that suggest a growing confidence among voters in Republican economic management.

“It’s been months since the alleged economic uncertainty shook things up, and despite all that, Democrats have actually dipped by 12 points in their economic standing,” he stated. This indicates a notable challenge for the Democratic Party, showing clear signs of discontent or disconnect among voters regarding their economic strategies.
