Coastal Carolina Coach Critiques Florida’s O’Sullivan After Tournament Tension
In a recent press conference, Coastal Carolina baseball coach Kevin Schnal expressed his frustration over an incident involving Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan, following his team’s narrow victory against East Carolina in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Schnal, whose team won 1-0, called O’Sullivan a “bully” in response to what he described as disrespectful behavior towards his coaching staff during an altercation at the Chanticleers’ Baseball Complex.
Reports indicate that O’Sullivan confronted tournament staff concerning a schedule change that shifted the start time for a game involving the Gators. Schnal felt compelled to defend his team, stating the staff worked hard and deserved recognition, not belittlement.
He commented, “What happened on our field this morning was that another coach was downplaying our assistant ads working hard. It’s not okay; we need to raise this.” Meanwhile, O’Sullivan’s frustration reportedly stemmed from the shift of Florida’s game time, leading to heightened emotions on both sides, which has since been captured in videos circulating on social media.
After the incident, Florida lost to East Carolina, 11-4. Initially, O’Sullivan declined to elaborate on the altercation, but later, both he and Florida’s athletic director issued apologies regarding their actions prior to the tournament. O’Sullivan admitted he mismanaged his emotions and failed to uphold the university’s standards of respect, stating, “I didn’t represent the University of Florida to the right standards yesterday.” He emphasized the need for better treatment of others, particularly under the pressures of competition.
Schnal shared his disappointment, noting that a coach holding a prestigious title should not act in a way that undermines mutual respect among peers. “This is a national champion coach who thinks he can come here and try to bully people around him,” he said. “I’m disappointed.”
With their recent victory, Coastal Carolina is set to compete against the Auburn Tigers, aiming to secure a spot in the College World Series.
