Trump Talks with Putin After Ukraine Drone Attack
President Donald Trump shared on Wednesday that he had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, prompted by a recent incident where Ukraine launched a surprise drone attack on Russian bombers. This attack occurred deep within Russian territory.
“I just finished speaking, by telephone, with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia. The call lasted approximately one hour and 15 minutes. We discussed the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides. It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate peace,” Trump noted in a post on Truth Social.
During the discussion, Trump mentioned how Ukrainian drones, reportedly smuggled into Russia, managed to destroy 41 Russian heavy bombers that were stationed well within Russian borders, far from Ukrainian missile range.
“President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields,” Trump remarked.
Moreover, Trump indicated that their conversation also touched upon the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran. He stated that Putin expressed willingness to become involved and contribute to the discussions concerning Iran’s nuclear enrichment program.
“We discussed Iran, and the fact that time is running out on Iran’s decision pertaining to nuclear weapons, which must be made quickly! I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement. President Putin suggested that he would participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in speeding things up. It is my opinion that Iran has been slow to finalize their decision on this critical issue, and we will need a clear answer soon,” Trump concluded.
This communication comes amidst ongoing direct negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian officials that, as of now, seem to have made little headway toward achieving a peaceful resolution.
