Kayla Ray Reed, wife of swimmer Ryan Lochte, has initiated divorce proceedings. She announced this news via an Instagram post on Wednesday.
In her message, the former Playboy model shared that deciding to end her seven-year union has been one of the “most painful” experiences of her life. She reflected that, earlier this year, she prayed and contemplated before making this difficult choice, emphasizing her deep respect for the institution of marriage.
“It hasn’t been easy,” Reed stated, as she posted an image of herself sitting outside. “I wasn’t ready to discuss this until I found a place of healing, rather than sharing from a freshly opened wound.”
She mentioned that sometimes life presents challenges that we don’t expect, and in those moments, tough decisions have to be made to protect our peace, as well as our children and future.
Reed also commented on the importance of authenticity in her life, stating, “I grew up valuing transparency and I intend to keep living that way. However, I will also maintain some privacy as I navigate this path.”
In her Instagram story, she expressed, “Time to Exhale,” accompanied by bandaged heart emojis.
Court documents reveal that Reed filed for divorce from the retired Olympian on March 26.
Reed stated that she is focusing on self-care as she moves ahead, expressing gratitude for the support she’s receiving: “Your prayers mean everything to me right now.”
Lochte, a twelve-time Olympic medalist, celebrates his son Caddenzane’s seventh birthday on June 17 and shares a daughter, Livray, with Reed, who will turn eight shortly after.
The couple got engaged in 2016 and were married two years later.
