Shaquille O’Neill Questions Chiefs’ Super Bowl Strategy
Shaquille O’Neill, the NBA legend, recently had some pointed remarks regarding the Kansas City Chiefs’ game plan during their Super Bowl loss. Appearing on the “New Heights” podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, he expressed surprise over the limited use of tight end Travis Kelce during the 44-20 defeat to the Eagles.
“I’ve got to ask, why didn’t they utilize you more in the Super Bowl?” Shaq inquired, noting the apparent frustration. “I know you might be upset, and I don’t mean to pry.”
In that Super Bowl, Kelce, who is usually a key contributor, caught only four passes for 39 yards. He responded to O’Neill’s question by acknowledging, “Yeah, I get it. We’re trying to involve everyone.”
O’Neal, a four-time NBA champion, remarked that the Chiefs should have included more plays that would increase their chances of winning. “We need to focus on what works, especially if you want to win the Super Bowl,” he said. He seemed to feel strongly about the strategy, adding, “I don’t want to nag you, but I wasn’t exactly pleased with it.”
Kelce noted that the Eagles’ defense was worth acknowledging, commenting, “They did a solid job against me and all that.” However, O’Neal wasn’t convinced by that rationale.
“Look, I know you don’t want to say anything, but I’ll say it for you. You need to utilize your star player—you’re 6’8” for a reason!” he emphasized.
In terms of his own game, Kelce continues to train hard this offseason, reportedly shedding about 25 pounds to enhance his performance. There have been rumors floating around about his retirement since February, but he seems focused and committed.
While he’s working hard, he’s also been enjoying quality time with his girlfriend, Taylor Swift. The pop star recently made headlines for buying back her music masters, which O’Neal humorously referenced during the podcast. He quipped about how Kelce’s brother, Jason, managed to impress Swift, saying, “He did something no one else could.”
Swift and Kelce have been dating since 2023. Their relationship has certainly added an interesting narrative layer to the football season, especially given her celebration of his Super Bowl victory with the 49ers back in February.
